Environment

All projects undertaken by FMS demand an Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA) to be undertaken before they are implemented and before a Processing License is granted. These are completed to the highest of international standards.

The ESIA study includes an assessment of the socio-economic implications of the project on the local and regional communities. This ensures that the development of the project benefits all without compromising the integrity of the environment, including surrounding communities.

Overburden and historic tailings piles contain heavy metals that can have detrimental effects on the environment. A major recognised benefit of processing this area provides a cleaner and safer environment when stored within a well designed TSF.

Social

FMS has established and maintained excellent relationships with local people, village councils, local governments and central government ministries in all jurisdictions of their projects.

FMS is an active member of the local community, and always seeks full support of the operation development. We have actively assisted the development by providing labour, local produce, access to land and security.

Through its Community and Social Responsibility programs FMS has funded, assisted with and donated to many community programs. Projects are identified based on the needs and priorities of their constituents.

Individual projects include the construction of local classrooms, teacher’s houses, medical facilities, local police station construction, ablution facilities, and water borehole construction.

Local Mine Rescue

On the 29th January 2017, FMS led an emergency rescue to save 14 trapped miners after a nearby (unaffiliated) artisanal mine collapsed. The team drilled a supply hole and then started a four day dig. All were saved.
